Great action on the flats of Sarasota Bay this past week. Anglers Bruce, Gary, and Jeff of Lakeland, FL had a great day of fishing around White Key on Sarasota Bay. While wade fishing the edge of a deep grass flat, throwing the Rip Tide 3″ Mullet, all three anglers caught and released many good spotted sea trout up to 25″ along with some nice slot redfish. The late afternoon tides seem to be producing the best bite. The afternoon sea breeze we have had lately is making it a bit difficult for kayak fishing, so the best way to deal with these windy conditions while fishing out of a kayak is to get out and wade fish the flats. A couple of things I like to carry is a 10′ piece of rope with a carabiner attached at each end. With this I can leave one end attached to the kayak the other end attached to myself. The benefit of having this setup is most importantly safety, and It keeps my kayak close by which has all my gear, tackle and cell phone handy while stalking the flats. This is much better than walking back a couple hundred yards to find that your anchor pulled and your kayak has blown away. I know this from experience. Not good. A good pair of wading boots will also be very important. You can't always see what lies beneath. Sting Rays, rocks, oysters and other critters can ruin your day.flor Steve Gibson 941-256-5833 www.shallowpocketsfishing.com |
Another great kayak trip with Jeremy V of New Mexico. Red was the color of the day! Jeremy caught and release many good Redfish to 28" on artificial baits. The Trout bite was a little slow today but Jeremy caught some good Trout as well. Steve Gibson 941-256-5833 www.shallowpocketsfishing.com |
Jim Cannon joined me for a sundown session on 3/10/12. The conditions were not favorable. High winds a rough water made it a little difficult at times but Jim still caught Trout,Flounder and his favorite ,Lady fish. Jim is a great fly angler and if you ever get to the Colorado area look him up. www.bluequillangler.com The Blue Quill Angler is a full-service fly shop and guide service located 30 miles west of Denver, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, providing anglers in the Front Range and beyond with top quality gear and education since 1988. Great morning on Sarasota Bay with Tom Ayars. Tom caught and released his first Redfish as well as some good Speckled Trout. The conditions were not favorable. We had a very short window first thing in the morning before a front was upon us. Most of the fish today were caught on the Heddon One Knocker as well as soft plastics under a popping cork. Great event held by the guys at paddle-fishing.com. The PFTS #3, "The Tackle Box" was held January 28 2012 in the Fort Desoto area. The fishing was good. Manages to take home the 1st place prize for largest Trout. Caught many good Trout throughout the day but could not get any Red's to the boat. Great charter with Lee Allen of Maryland on 2-6-2012. Good Redfish action on top water pugs. Steve Gibson 941-256-5833 www.shallowpocketsfishing.com |
January proved to be a great month for fishing the back country rivers and creeks here in SW Florida Anglers fishing with Shallow Pocket Fishing caught and released many good Snook on artificial baits. With the weather and water temps staying a bit warmer this year, the bite in these locations will slow down. I am expecting to start seeing more Snook heading back out on to the flats. There has been no shortage of Redfish and Trout on the flats of Sarasota/Tampa Bay. We have been catching most of the Red's and Trout on top waters and Riptide soft plastics. Look for the Redfish to be in the sand holes. Take your time fishing each hole. The water in my region has been pretty clean so the fish are very spooky. Down size your fluorocarbon leader and make long casts. Steve Gibson 941-256-5833 www.shallowpocketsfishing.com |
